I’m a self-taught luthier, starting out twenty years ago by fixing my own instruments, then began working on repairs for friends. I’ve repaired everything from inexpensive ukes to $10,000 custom guitars.

As a forth-generation woodworker, I can say that instrument repair requires the highest level of woodworking expertise. Not only does the instrument have to look good when repaired, it also has to sound as good as it looks. I specialize in acoustic instrument building and repair and my shop is located in La Verne, California, in eastern Los Angeles county, open by appointment only. Contact details are below.

Typical services include:

  • Instrument Set-Up – New instruments often have not had the string height refined for easy playing – this is something that is a personal preference for the player and makes playing much more enjoyable. In technical terms, I measure the neck for straightness and adjust as necessary, as well as check to make sure all frets are level and the ends are smooth where the player’s hand touches them. I will measure the string height over the 12th fret and adjust string height as required at the bridge and nut.
  • Nut and/or saddle replacement.
  • Cosmetic repairs to chips and dings
  • Bridge issues
  • Headstock tuner key repair/replacement

I also can address more serious issues requiring invasive surgical techniques, such as:

  • Repairing cracks in tops, backs or sides of the instrument
  • Repair of broken headstocks
  • Repair or replacement of bridges
